YOUR SKIMMING ENQUIRY

Planning your skimming job

Discuss skimming suitable walls or ceilings, with preparation and the soundness of the existing surface checked.

What to include in your enquiry

  • Area and current finish
  • Cracks loose areas or moisture
  • Decoration deadline and access

What should the quote cover?

Define preparation, bonding or repairs, finish and drying/decorating advice.

Can every damaged surface simply be skimmed?

No. Loose backing, moisture or movement may require investigation and repair before a finish is applied.

Local property and responsibility checks

For retained historic finishes, ask whether repair or compatible renewal is preferable to covering them; check any proposed alteration at the actual address.

What skimming does

Quick answer

Enquire about skimming walls or ceilings to create a new plaster finish, with the existing surface assessed for preparation and suitability.

Skimming creates a thin plaster finish over a suitable background. It is a finishing operation rather than a replacement for missing support or a remedy for structural movement. A painted room may be a candidate, but the condition and compatibility of the surface still matter. Describe whether you want an entire wall refinished or a local area blended into an existing finish. A plasterer needs to assess what is beneath the visible surface before confirming the method and price.

Preparation on existing walls

Loose finishes, contamination, paint condition and background behaviour can affect adhesion and preparation. Ask the business to explain what it will retain and what needs removal or repair. Product guidance governs the actual system; this is not a universal primer recipe. If a finish repeatedly fails, do not commission another skim without understanding why. Agree how repaired and untouched areas meet so a small patch quotation does not imply a perfectly uniform whole room.

Skimming plasterboard

New boards need suitable installation and appropriate joint/corner details before finishing. Ask who checks the board work and who is responsible for making good any deficiencies. The board type and specified system affect the preparation, so an identical treatment is not assumed for every panel. A skim price should identify whether it includes the associated joint work and beads. Keep services and fittings coordinated before the finishing stage, with the relevant qualified trade dealing with their work.

Cracks, moisture and textured coatings

Skimming across a crack does not explain its cause or prevent further movement. Damp stains and loose areas need their own assessment. Textured coatings require a material and work-scope check before disturbance, rather than an assumption that covering eliminates every risk. Tell the plasterer what you know about earlier leaks, repairs and coating assessment. Where a ceiling is unstable or leaking, address the immediate condition through direct appropriate help before arranging a cosmetic finish.

A skim must suit the underlying surface

Assess adhesion, moisture and the backing before skimming. For retained finishes, ask whether local repair or a compatible system better suits the fabric rather than assuming a new surface can conceal every defect.

Finish quality and decorating

Agree what result is expected under the room’s normal lighting and at joins, corners and retained features. A smooth plaster finish and the final painted appearance are separate stages. Ask when the chosen system will be ready for decoration and what preparation the decorator will need; do not assume a single number of days fits every room. Keep drying and access arrangements realistic. If decoration is included, define the product, preparation and number of stages in the quotation rather than rely on a ready-to-paint slogan.

What should this quotation actually cover?

Ask whether the quote includes…

Specify preparation, any local repair, edges and the final finish. Ask whether removal of an unsuitable coating or repair of a loose background changes the scope; skimming alone is not equivalent to rebuilding the surface.

  • Background assessment and preparation.
  • Corners, reveals, joints and agreed repairs.
  • Protection, waste, VAT and decorating exclusions.
