Boards are one stage of the job
Quick answer
Enquire about installing or replacing plasterboard, with the board arrangement, joints and final finish specified for the job.
Plasterboarding installs panels as part of a suitable wall or ceiling arrangement. Specify whether you want boards only, a jointed finish, a skim or a complete new lining. The background, support and intended use govern the board and fixing proposal. Include joints, corners, service openings and the agreed decorating-ready finish when comparing installation quotes.
Useful next steps
Choose for the room and purpose
Ask for the actual board specification and its role in the arrangement. Wet-area suitability, fire and sound requirements need a complete design, not a product label alone. Moisture-resistant does not mean every finished assembly is waterproof. Bathrooms and tiled areas need appropriate associated details assessed for their use. The business should explain the proposal and any limits, with relevant technical guidance. Do not substitute a cheaper panel or omit layers without review of the specified result.
Support, fixing and concealed materials
Boards need the appropriate support and fixing arrangements for the specified system. Existing ceilings and walls should be assessed rather than assumed sound. Identify known services and suspect materials before disturbance; the plasterer must coordinate relevant specialist work. A new layer can change interfaces and conceal information needed later. Ask how the proposal handles these issues and keep suitable records. Do not drill a suspect coating or investigate unstable material yourself while preparing an enquiry.
Ceilings, openings and adjoining work
Ceiling access, window reveals, corners and transitions can make installations of similar area very different. Agree the finished positions and who handles lights, alarms and other fittings through the relevant qualified trade. Retained cornices, joinery and fixtures can affect the detail. A broad boarding price may exclude this making good. Discuss the work sequence so service changes are complete at the right stage. Where support or structural issues are found, obtain the appropriate assessment before the new lining proceeds.
Authority and specification before boarding
Confirm authority to alter the interior and identify the required construction and performance specification. The board, supports, fixings and joints form a system; no standard board choice suits every historic or renovated room.
Joint finishing or a skim finish
Agree how joints, corners and the face of the panels are finished. A specified jointed finish and a full skim are different scopes; neither should be assumed included in a boards-only quote. British Gypsum’s plaster-system guidance distinguishes backgrounds and finish requirements. Clarify what the decorator receives and any preparation still needed. Ask for drying and decoration instructions suited to the chosen method and site conditions, with the intended appearance discussed before work.
